Catch Straight Kicks to the Body

Buakaw catching front teep to counter knee

There are various ways the under catch against straight kicks is taught. Some say you should only use the lead hand to catch while others say teach using either the lead hand or the rear hand (generally your right hand catches their right kick. Your left hand catches their left kick). When I originally learned this catch many years ago it was taught as just the one hand catching. Nowadays most teach a double hand catch where one hand catches under the heel or ankle and the other hand clamps over the top. Regardless of your preferences, you generally take a small step back or even just lean back a little to take the sting out of the kick (the same idea as rolling with the punch). Catch and secure the foot. Then perform your counter technique.
